Here is something we may not
often think about: We become what we worship. In Ezekiel God is called Sovereign
LORD 215 times! 215. Over 60 times this phrase “then you will know that I am the
LORD” is used, usually in reference to something horrific that occurs. So it is
obvious Judah had no idea that Yahweh was their only God, despite their long
history with him. It is obvious because of their behavior. In Ezekiel 22: 6 –
12 there is a long and sickening list that catalogues the sinful practices
Judah regularly practiced. These were not something that once and never again,
these are things they engaged in constantly. Words like contempt, oppressed,
mistreat, despised, and desecrate describe their actions and their hearts. They
became just like the corrupt and vile gods they worshipped. They ignored and
rejected the reality that Yahweh is the Sovereign authority of their lives. Are
we any different? “Jesus is Lord” is the foundational confession of the
Christian. Jesus is the authority over all of our lives. We surrender all to him
and him alone. This confession might not be repeated 215 times or said over 60
times but it is the central truth we acknowledge and live by. It is what we say,
and it must be what we live. Our behavior will mirror that which we worship. The
lists of sins in the New Testament are not all that different from the list in
Ezekiel. The false gods of this age lead to behavior every bit as vile as then.
And the result will be the same – Judgment. Judgment doesn’t come arbitrarily.
There is a reason, a cause for it. Judgment is earned, remember what Paul told
us: the wages of sin is death. So then, we live for and serve the Sovereign
LORD and his Son, Jesus, who is our Lord, the Anointed and Chosen One, our
Savior. As you go about your business today just say these words “Jesus Is
LORD!” Repeat this all day long. Because we become what we worship.
